How to Make Penne all’Arrabbiata

Penne all’Arrabbiata is a fiery and flavorful Italian classic that’s perfect for anyone who loves a little heat in their pasta. Known for its simple yet bold ingredients, this dish features a rich tomato sauce spiced with red chili peppers. It’s the ultimate comfort food that can be made in under 30 minutes! And if you’re short on time, you can skip making the sauce from scratch and pick up our ready-made Arrabbiata sauce from Delizia’s deli—perfect for a quick, delicious meal.

Penne all’Arrabbiata Ingredients

  • 400g penne pasta (available at Delizia’s Northfields deli)

  • 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (from our deli)

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1-2 red chilli peppers, finely chopped (adjust based on heat preference)

  • 400g canned whole peeled tomatoes (or use our ready-made Arrabbiata sauce)

  • Salt, to taste

  • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish

  • Grated Parmesan cheese (optional, from our deli)


Instructions

Step 1: Cook the Penne

  1. Boil the Pasta: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne and cook until al dente, following the package instructions (around 10-12 minutes). Be sure to reserve a cup of pasta water before draining.


Step 2: (Optional) Prepare the Arrabbiata Sauce from Scratch

  1. Sauté the Garlic and Chilli: If making the sauce from scratch, heat extra virgin olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Add minced garlic and chopped chili peppers, sautéing for 1-2 minutes until fragrant but not browned.

  2. Add the Tomatoes: Pour in the canned tomatoes (crush them by hand or with a spoon) and season with salt. Simmer the sauce for about 15 minutes, letting it thicken slightly. Add a splash of the reserved pasta water if it becomes too thick.


Skip this step if you’re using Delizia’s ready-made Arrabbiata sauce! Simply heat the sauce in a pan over medium heat until warmed through.


Step 3: Combine the Pasta and Sauce

  1. Toss Together: Add the cooked penne to the skillet with the sauce (whether homemade or pre-made). Toss everything to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce. Let it cook for another 2 minutes, allowing the flavours to meld.


Step 4: Serve

  1. Plate and Garnish: Serve the Penne all’Arrabbiata hot, garnished with fresh parsley and a sprinkle of grated Parmesan cheese, if desired.
